WHAT TO DO IN THE CHIMAY REGION?

The Chimay region is full of tourist activities of all kinds. There is something for everyone and you will not be short of activities to explore during your stay.

10 km from Chimay and France, the village of Seloignes is a small natural gem full of discoveries and ideally located near many heritage sites to discover. You can thus combine relaxation and cultural discovery .

Hiking and cycling

The region offers many possibilities for hiking and cycling. You can start your hikes from the house, the forest is only a few steps from the cottage.

On the marked trails, you will find, among other things, hikes that cross the magnificent Chimay forest but also Le "" Franc Bois "" in Lompret included in the list of exceptional real estate heritage of Wallonia .

For cyclists, mountain bike trails through the woods will give you all the thrills you are looking for, but you also have family cycle routes with two Ravels that cross the region (Line 156 from Momignies to Hastière and line 109/2 from Thuin to Chimay).
An access point to the Ravel is located in the village, 3 km from the gîte (parking at the foot of the Ravel (Route de Monceau, at the level of the old station, n°179).
You don't have any bikes but you would like to rent some on site, it's possible: Bikes can be rented at the Momignies tourist office (ferme château de Macon), at the Chimay tourist office (Rue de Noailles 6, 6460 Chimay - +3260 51 00 74), or even in the But Sport store (Zoning Commercial, 18 a, Rue de Virelles, 6460 Chimay - +3260 21 33 39 ).

Heritage and cultural sites

Chimay is a principality – you can visit its castle (which houses a theatre that is part of the exceptional real estate heritage of Wallonia) and its estate. The setting is enchanting and will immerse you in the magical atmosphere of medieval castles.

The medieval city also has a magnificent collegiate church and the city can be visited through its narrow streets. During the tourist season, you can also visit Chimay and its surroundings on board its tourist train.

The Scourmont Abbey where theThe famous Trappist monastery of Chimay is 10 minutes from the cottage. Come and immerse yourself in the world of the monks in an exceptional site.
After your visit, ""l'auberge du poteaupré"" or the restaurant ""les quatre saisons"" will allow you to taste both Trappist wine and local products.

Historical sites will also delight enthusiasts:
Visit to the 40-44 Lieutenant Cook Museum: Visit on request all year round (notify 48 hours in advance) - Prices: €2.50/adult - €2.00/groups, pensioners, veterans - Free for children under 12.
The site of Hitler's shelter in the village of Bruly can also be visited.

Stroll through the village of Lompret (one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia) and come and admire the "Roman camp" (flint points dating from the Paleolithic period and a double rampart dating from the Neolithic period). After your stroll, have a drink by the white water or taste the regional speciality "escavèche"» in the picturesque restaurant ""l'eau Blanche"".

Go and observe birds and wildlife in the aquascope of Lac de Virelles and its nature and ornithological reserve . Every year, wild species come to nest in this magnificent setting.
The aquascope offers a visit in the form of a fun activity "The reed enigma" - this game offers an experience that is both entertaining and educational. It is an opportunity to discover nature while having fun with family or friends.

After this visit, if you want to enjoy fine and gastronomic dishes, go to the Place de Virelles to enjoy dishes in the restaurant Le ""contre façon"".

In the surrounding area and in the equally green Viroinval Valley, you can, for example, visit the Fondry des Chiens (a natural chasm located on the heights and to the east of the village of Nismes ). This site is exceptional and worth the detour.

The Chimay circuit – car – motorcycle – ancestor circuit, … many events throughout the year will delight enthusiasts.

The commune of Momignies also offers entertaining activities:

- The Gabelous circuit - a walking game between the town of Momignies and France (information sheet available from the tourist office)

- Visit and entertainment (escape game) withinCourquain Customs (cult location from the film ""Rien à déclaré"").

You will also find cross-country ski trails in the village of Rièzes and that of l'Escaillière.

The Ry de Rome dam in Couvin contains impressive flora and fauna with lovely bucolic viewpoints and allows the whole family to get some fresh air in a green setting (Ry de Rome dam 5660 Couvin).

The lakes of the water of the hour, about twenty minutes away, gives you access to a tourist complex around the Eau d'Heure dams, with many aquatic activities . You can also find a golf course there.

If you prefer the thrill of perching in the trees, cross the border which is just a stone's throw away and try the Fumay treetop adventure course in the heart of the French Ardennes.

Specialties

In terms of taste, the region is also full of specialties: Of course, the Chimay Trappist and its cheese are to be savoured, but you also have the Chimay Pinot, the Chimay gin and you can taste the Chimay cured meats, its escavèche, the Seloignes snails or even the Chimacien cake.
